Course details – learing outcomes

1. Emergency Response & Assessment

  • Recognising and assessing emergencies quickly
  • Staying calm and managing panic in high-stress situations
  • Following DRSABCD (Danger, Response, Send for help, Airway, Breathing, CPR, Defibrillation)

2. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

  • Performing CPR on adults, children, and infants
  • Using Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) effectively
  • Understanding the differences between one-rescuer and two-rescuer CPR

3. Managing Unconscious Casualties

  • Placing someone in the recovery position
  • Monitoring vital signs (breathing, pulse)
  • Handling shock and fainting

4. Treating Injuries & Medical Conditions

  • Wound care (cuts, burns, bleeding control)
  • Fracture and sprain management (applying slings and bandages)
  • Managing head, neck, and spinal injuries
  • Choking relief techniques for different age groups
  • Poisoning and envenomation treatment (snake bites, insect stings, etc.)
  • Severe allergic reactions (using an EpiPen for anaphylaxis)

5. Handling Medica Emergencies

  • Heart attack and stroke response
  • Diabetes and seizures first aid
  • Asthma and anaphylaxis management
  • Dealing with heat exhaustion, hypothermia, and dehydration

Course Duration

This qualification will be delivered over a period of 1-2 days including all learning, simulated practical activities, and assessment activities.

Entry Requirements

This course requires you to have a good understanding of written and verbal English and maths (known as language, literacy and numeracy ‘LLN’). All students who enrol in a course are required to undertake an LLN assessment.

To enrol the prospective learner must:

  • Have completed at least Year 10 or equivalent.
  • Be 18 years of age or over
  • Have a valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) number
  • Have a valid and current email address and phone number
  • Have a valid Photo ID
  • provide Proof of Residency (Birth Certificate/Passport/Medicare Card or Citizenship Certificate)

Training Delivery and Assessment

This course is delivered in a blended mode including face-to-face classroom-based learning, and self-study done in your own time.

You will require a computer and an internet connection to be able to access the learning modules.

Computer skills

As this qualification involves accessing computers for accessing learning materials, downloading and uploading documents, we recommend learners have the basic computer skills to engage with all requirements.

Physical requirements

This qualification requires dealing with emergency situations which may involve:

  • Lifting and manual handling to assist clients
  • Maintain high level of personal hygiene
  • Monitoring client’s health till required assistance arrives
  • Patience, sincerity and adherence to policy and processes
